Beauty blogs worldwide have been buzzing about Korean beauty recently, with images of the healthy and dewy complexions of Korea’s hottest stars. How do they have such impeccable porcelain skin? And what are their secrets to having such a shiny glow, or as they call it mul-gwang?
To keep your skin care up to date, we asked Dr. Costi for some tips and recommendations from the K-beauty rituals. Read these 7 secrets to get the best skin of your life!
No.1: Extra exfoliation.
Why do Koreans have better skin than all of us? It’s because they’ve taken an extra step with their exfoliation. A quick and effective trick that they use is to take a soft cloth dipped in warm water to scrub their face. While being gentle on skin, this gets the dirt and oil from your skin on the cloth and makes your skin clearer and brighter in minutes. This also helps keep wrinkles and fine lines away.
To try it, soak a cotton cloth in hot water and squeeze the water out. Gently swipe it across your skin in an upward motion to exfoliate your face.
No.2: Charcoal.
Did you know Koreans were the ones who introduced the charcoal face masks? We know charcoal as a miracle ingredient for clear skin and we trust it blindly for getting rid of those annoying blackheads and whiteheads, and this started as a Korean beauty trend!
Koreans rely on charcoal sheet masks or prepare at-home face masks with activated charcoal and other natural ingredients to get the skin we all envy.
No.3: Hydration, hydration.
Mul-gwang is all about hydration! And it is achieved with mists, sheet masks, and layering your moisturizer will help you achieve that radiant, dewy, glow. There are also creams and primers infused with pearl extracts that will diffuse imperfections and catch the light to get your skin looking luminous.
Another tip for that Korean glow, is that if you have dry skin, try mixing a face oil or serum in with your foundation.
Extra tip: Because your skin goes into recovery mode at night, Korean women use a moisturizing overnight mask. It repairs skin cells, boosts collagen and revitalizes skin when you are asleep. The overnight treatment also helps retain and lock the lost moisture in the skin and make it look brighter and fresh in the morning.
No.4: Snail cream.
Yes, you read that correctly. Snail slime does an amazing job of getting rid of any skin irritation, while being extremely hydrating, making your skin glow.
Mucin is the slime excreted by snails when they are stressed (sorry vegans). The proteins in snail slime have anti-aging benefits, as well as reversal of sun damage. While it will not affect deep folds, it is sworn by to improve skin texture and quality.
No.5: Tap, don’t smear.
The way you apply your skin care products is as important as the products you use. That’s why the women in Korea make sure to slowly tap their products on their skin. They do not smear their moisturizers and serums and rub them! The way to properly do it is to dot the product or rub it on their fingertips to warm it up and then apply all over their face in a circular motion. Then they tap their face to lightly massage, as they believe that’s how the product absorbs better and gives extra benefits.
No.6: Sun protection.
Korean women never leave the house without applying sunscreen. Moreover, they often use natural skin brighteners like vitamin C, rice extracts and licorice. The main goal is to avoid brown spots.
Furthermore, they’re careful to avoid direct sunlight by using hats, umbrellas, and gloves whenever necessary.
No.7: Sheep oil.
Yes, sheep oil from sheep. A Korean beauty brand has a sheep oil cream that’s actually extracted from the wool of sheep. It’s without any harm to the animal, and it’s supposed to have amazing hydrating properties.
