Well beauties, just the thought of those summer days is getting us excited 🌞 ⛱️ The soft breeze, the warm sun on our skin: the shorts, the skirts, the sandals that we are getting ready to wear. Oh right, there’s the issue of having to show more skin. Of course we want to, but, and it’s a big but, is our skin ready?
After living some of the harshest conditions ever, cooped up inside, covered up, wearing a face mask and constantly disinfecting our hands, our skin might be suffering: acne and dryness being the two main issues all over our body🌵
When your complexion is looking oily, it’s most probably because of the buildup of dirt, pollution and make-up. This can lead to excess shine, large pores and acne.
“Add a mattifying face mask to your weekly routine” advises Dr. Costi. We love a clay or charcoal mask that will gently provide a tighter and less shiny face with every use.
As with any mask, make sure you leave it on for at least 15 minutes, then gently wash it away with warm water and a face sponge.
When the skin over the joints is over-exposed to friction, it can look and feel very dry. This happens especially after winter, especially over our knees.
If it’s not having any effect to simply hydrate, then you need to up your game.
As per Dr. Costi, the best time to soften and treat the skin is post-shower, when it’s still damp. “Gently massage with coconut or almond oil, making sure that the skin absorbs it deeply”. This will heal dehydrated skin and reduce the irritation that causes pigmentation. You’re welcome!
If you still need to brighten the skin on your knees, you can use a whitening/brightening treatment, but make sure to also cover with sunscreen before exposing to sunlight.
The skin on the elbows is also thin and it gets irritated quite easily from friction. So preparing for short-sleeve season, you can use a cortisone cream to reduce redness. “Use it twice a day until you see the desired effect”.
And Attention!! Do not try to exfoliate with a body scrub! “This will only increase irritation” as per Dr. Costi. “Exfoliation if for flaky or thick skin, not applicable in this case.”
If you feel you have bumpy arms, also known as ketosis pilaris, you can treat it with a 2 step regimen.
First, wash with a gentle soap-free cleanser that will hydrate the irritated skin.
Second, treat it with a body lotion containing lactic acid that will cleanse the pores and reduce irritation. Dr. Costi can prescribe the best creams for your skin condition, upon consultation.
Once you start working out again or wearing tight clothes, you might notice that bacne will start showing up. The only to fight it is don’t sit in sweaty clothes and always let your skin breathe.
“For bacne, or acne, it’s always recommended to use a glycolic or salicylic acid wash. And if it’s a severe case, then we can prescribe an antibiotic” advises Dr. Costi.
Fake it till you make it!
So what if you haven’t seen the sun in ages and you’re as pale as a vampire? Just look for the perfect self-tanning lotion that will provide you with that perfect golden skin.
And before applying, prepare your skin: cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate with an oil-free moisturizer before applying your tanning gel or spray.
(Read our blog all about how to get the best results while using self-tanners.)
And remember: Avoid tanning booths at all cost! Dr. Costi warns that they may be related to many forms of skin cancer.
