Skin Care 101: a guide for beginners

  • August 1, 2021

Whether you’re new to skin care or you’re a certified skin expert, we thought it might be good to refresh our old routines.

With the skin market really booming, we asked Dr. Costi to simplify it for us by setting a few rules that anyone can easily follow to get perfectly good skin.

So beauties, without any more delay, here is Dr. Costi’s beginners guide to skin care.

Skin Care today

“Skin care is not a luxury anymore, it’s a necessity” explains our favorite dermatologist. In fact, taking care of ourselves and our skin is now more important than ever, as if has a direct correlation to how we feel about ourselves- therefore to our mental wellbeing.

“Don’t be confused or scared!” Dr. Costi continues. “Yes there are so many ingredients and products to choose from, but instead of seeing it as overwhelming it just means that you have a chance to find exactly what your skin needs- if you know what you’re looking for.”

So what does our skin need?

Even though we all have different skin types with different issues, they all need the same basic care.

“When creating your skin care routine, it’s always best to keep it simple” Dr. Costi says. “Start with your basics and then expand with some options as you see fit.”

Rule no.1: your skin must be clean 🌸

The first rule of skin care, is that you must clean your skin in the morning and in the evening.

In the morning, you clean to remove any sweat or oil that has accumulated on your face during your sleep, from your hair or your pillow (among other things J haha)

Then in the evening, it’s very very important to remove not only makeup and pollution but also excess oil, sweat and dead skin cells that collect on the skin throughout the day.

So when you’re choosing a facial cleanser, always opt for a gentle hydrating one, preferably containing glycerine and ceramides to restore and maintain the skin’s barrier.

Extra fresh option? Exfoliate once a week to remove excess buildup on top of the skin’s surface. This will induce cell turnover and encourage your skin to regenerate its own collagen, therefore keeping you fresh and young!

Choose products with AHA or BHA chemical exfoliants, which are gentle and will not irritate your skin.

Rule no.2: your skin must be moisturized 💦

As Dr. Costi says, “Moisturized skin is younger-looking skin.”

Even for oily skin, it is a big mistake to clean it and not moisturize it properly.

There are moisturizing creams, serums, gels and masks for all skin types, and the best ones will contain these ingredients:

Hyaluronic acid which works to plump skin and restore lost hydration.

Ceramides which are crucial for skin-barrier strength and overall health (and recommended for those with dry skin and eczema).

Vitamin C which provides antioxidant protection and overall skin brightening.

Rule no. 3: your skin must be protected 🌞

The most important rule for good looking skin? Sun protection. Yes, sunscreen is your first and best protection against skin-aging as well as skin cancer.

The basics of protection are:

Sun Protection Factor 50+,

broad spectrum to shield from UVA and UVB,

as well as water-resistant sunscreen (especially in summer).

Then there are two types to choose from: chemical or mineral-based sunscreen.

Mineral or physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide will work as a shield, blocking the sun’s rays from penetrating the skin (which won’t irritate sensitive skin).

Whereas chemical sunscreens on the other hand protect the skin against UV rays by absorbing them, relying on ingredients such as octocrylene or avobenzone.

So beauties how are we looking? 😍

I’d say we’re pretty confident now in our skin care basics!  Still need some advice? Well why not book your consultation with Dr. Costi and get the answers to all your personal skin care concerns.
