The key to flawless skin that all the celebrities swear by is: wearing sunscreen daily, no excuses. If you’re one of Dr. Costi’s followers then you are, like every celebrity, a diligent and active wearer of a high SPF protection. But now remember, you have to reapply it every 2 hours and that’s where it gets tricky and we tend to not really do it.

However, it turns out it’s easier that we thought if we just consider a few tips and tricks that will help us prioritize sun protection without messing up our makeup.

Are you ready to take notes? We asked Dr. Costi how to apply sunscreen over your makeup.

With a sponge

With a microfiber sponge that looks like a beauty blender, apply a light creamy sunscreen in dots on your cheekbones and forehead as if applying your foundation. Then continue blending it, avoiding any dragging so as not to mess up your foundation.

As per Dr. Costi, the objective is not to lose any foundation coverage and not cause any redness of the skin, covering the whole face in an even layer. However, you will have to reapply your blush and bronzer. The result is a glowing and protected skin, without having to remove all your makeup and reapply it.

With a setting spray

Here’s a great idea: a makeup setting spray that offers built-in sun protection. These products are clear so they don’t leave any residue, and they are as light as a fine mist. You can spritz them on before, during, and after applying your makeup. Dr. Costi recommends to get one made with hyaluronic acid to hydrate as they shield the skin from the sun.

With a brush

One of the most effective and easy ways to reapply sunscreen atop foundation is by using a powder.

For a quick touch-up during your lunch break or before going to a meeting, why not use a powder sunscreen that you can quickly apply with a brush.

These come as a loose powder formula with water-resistant protection, so it’s sweat proof and it blends into all skin tones. “It’s a great way to set your makeup, reduce facial oil on a humid day and at the same time provide sun protection” says Dr. Costi.

With a compact

In case you don’t like loose powders, either because they have a tendency to spill or because you don’t know how to apply them, then a compact is a great option for you. A tinted compact powder will allow you to touch up your makeup and apply sunscreen at the same time. It’s great to keep in your purse, and you can take it anywhere for touch-ups as needed- which is something Dr. Costi recommends.

So now you’ve got some shopping to do!

If you do wear makeup, make sure to include a sunscreen before your makeup routine as well as a post-makeup product for reapplication. Remember that you should reapply your sunscreen even when staying indoors, because UV rays come through glass windows.

A new product to invest in will be the SPF face mist that you can reapply any time throughout the day.
