Hello hot beauties in the hot hot sun!

As you know, self-tanning can feel like rocket science, especially if you’re attempting it for the first time. From streaky legs to orange palms, achieving the perfect tan at home can be tricky without the expertise of a professional.

Lucky for us, there are many self-tanning products available now that make having glowing skin easier and more effective. A sun-kissed glow can boost your confidence and enhance your summer wardrobe. Plus, with the right care, your tan can last for days—perfect for a busy schedule filled with weddings, holidays, and summer parties.

To help you get that flawless, professional-looking tan at home, we asked the experts at Dr. Costi’s Clinic to share their pro tips.

Avoid these mistakes to ensure your tan looks perfect all summer.

Mistake 1: Skipping Skin Prep

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not preparing their skin properly. “Neglecting to moisturize your hands and just ‘winging it’ is a common error,” says our expert. “Remember, if you don’t moisturize your hands, you’ll end up with tanned knuckles. Also, shave, exfoliate, and remove deodorant beforehand to create a smooth base.”

For salon spray tans, avoid wearing tight clothing like skinny jeans or leggings. Choose to wear loose, comfortable clothes to prevent any marks on your fresh tan.

Uriage Body Scrubbing Cream

Pro Tip: Use a good body scrub to prep your skin, but ensure there’s no oily residue left behind as it can prevent the tan from adhering properly.

Mistake 2: Orange Fingers and Feet

Like your hands, your feet can be tricky to tan. “Apply two coats of tan to your body and one to your face. Start from your ankles and work upwards. By the time you finish, the first coat should be dry enough for a second application,” advises our specialist. Use the leftover product on your tanning glove for your hands and feet, and clean between fingers and toes with a damp cloth.

Pro Tip: Keep a cleansing cloth handy to remove excess tan from tricky areas.

Mistake 3: Hair Removal Timing

If you prefer smooth, hair-free skin, make sure to remove hair at least 24 hours before tanning. “Proper prep is crucial for an even tan. Shave or wax ahead of time, and exfoliate with a dry brush or scrub,” our expert suggests. This ensures a smooth surface for the tan to develop evenly and fade naturally.

Mistake 4: Over-Tanning Your Face

“Two coats on the body, one on the face,” is the golden rule. Too much self-tan on the face can look unnatural. Thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate your face, splash with cold water to close pores, and apply your self-tanner. Remember, avoid exfoliating acids and retinol when using self-tan.

Pro Tip: Brush your teeth before tanning to avoid toothpaste marks that can remove the tanning around your mouth.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Your Ears

When applying the self-tan to your face, don’t forget your ears. Use a short fibre makeup brush to lightly buff excess tan from your face and sweep around your ears for a seamless look.

Mistake 6: Tanning Brows and Hairline

If you have light-coloured hair, be cautious around your brows and hairline. Applying moisturizer or balm to these areas can prevent the tan from clinging. Prime your skin with a good pH balanced primer,  and use a bit of your regular moisturizer on your brows.

Mistake 7: Skipping on your Tan Maintenance

To prolong your tan, keep your skin hydrated. Drink plenty of water and moisturize daily with a good lotion. Avoid oil-based products as they can cause your tan to fade faster.

For your face, steer clear of retinol and exfoliating acids while your tan develops. Avoid harsh body exfoliants, but you can use an exfoliating body wash to gently remove the tan after four to five days for an even fade.

Pro Tip: If your tan needs a boost, apply a lighter coat of self-tan four days after the initial application.
