OK beauties answer this question, which products can you live without for a year: make-up or skin care?

We all know the correct answer! Even though applying make-up is such a pleasure as it can instantly transform and improve your skin, the truth is that skin care is the basis of a flawless complexion. The other truth is that it takes time for skin care to work its magic and make a difference in our skin.

How much time exactly? We asked Dr. Costi to give a quick overview of how long it takes for our skin products to work.

Face cleansers: Instant result

A cleanser works at the surface level of your skin to clean it, so it should work immediately leaving you feeling clean and soft.

In case your skin feel a little tight after cleansing, this means that the cleanser is too harsh and has stripped away your natural oils.

Dr. Costi’s tip: Always follow with serum and moisturizer after cleansing.

Moisturizers: 0 – 2 weeks

No matter your skin type, oily or dry, you should always use a moisturizer. Apart from the immediate effect of hydrating and plumping your skin, a nice moisturizer will help you get rid of any dryness or tightness after around 2 weeks.

Serums and spot treatments: 3- 8 weeks

Acne, pigmentation, or wrinkles usually have specific serums that are packed with specific ingredients to treat them. Since these types of skin concerns are rooted very deep within the skin, it takes time for the active ingredients to penetrate and heal the inflammation.

This is why it can take up to 8 weeks of consistent use to see results from a serum.

Exfoliant: 0 – 8 weeks

An exfoliation once or twice a week will help unclog your pores and clear away dirt, oil, and dead skin build-up. Immediately you will see an improvement in your skin after using it, where your skin looks brighter, smoother, and more even.

For more specific concerns like blackheads, whiteheads and acne, it can take up to 8 weeks.

Retinol: 6 – 26 weeks

For acne, Retinol must be regularly used for up to 6 weeks to deliver good results.

For fine lines and wrinkles, it takes up to 26 weeks to see visible results. This is because it takes much longer for your skin to increase collagen production (compared to healing acne.)

Vitamin C: 3 – 8 weeks

To diminish hyperpigmentation, brighten your complexion, and even out your skin tone, use a Vitamin C which will provide you with noticeable improvements within 3 weeks.

Hyaluronic Acid: 0 – 8 weeks

A savior for dry and dehydrated skin, Hyaluronic Acid immediately replenishes and plumps skin upon application. Within 8 weeks you should start to see improvements in skin elasticity and skin smoothness as well.

Salicylic Acid: 4 – 6 weeks

A chemical exfoliator, it works by dissolving any dirt that clogs your pores, but it takes several weeks to start seeing the full effects of clearer, smoother skin.

Salicylic acid will help for sure with acne, whiteheads and blackheads but you must wait for the full effect.

Dr. Costi’s opinion

“Any skin care product that promises overnight results is not being honest” explains Dr. Costi. Skin care products work on the deep cellular levels of the skin, so you might start to see results after months of being consistent with your routine. Even then, no results are guaranteed as the effectiveness of ingredients and products will work differently on your skin.

“There are some products that will give you an instant glow, that’s true: but they work like make-up, affecting the surface of the skin. They might contain light-reflective particles that will make your skin glow but only for a short while.”

So as a rule, patience is your friend when it comes to glowing skin. “Find products that suit your skin type, without trying all the skin trends out there… Once you have a good routine covering all the basics, you should be good to go with it for the long run.”

in the end, always listen to your heart and to your dermatologist! They always lead you to the best solution 💋💋
