Well beauties, in the age of K-pop and Squid Game, there is no escaping the Korean influence, especially in the world of K-beauty skin care routines.
Which is where double cleansing comes in.
We asked Dr. Costi for more information about how it works and why we should try it.
Double cleansing is pretty self-explanatory: it means “to clean your face twice”: first with an oil-based cleanser and then with a water-based cleanser.
This helps to remove the stubborn, pore-clogging and acne-causing impurities that can remain on the skin after washing your face.
“I know that most of us tend to lather up with a nice foam or cleanser, wash our face and call it a night. But after a long day being exposed to pollution and free-radicals, that’s not enough” explains Dr. Costi.
That’s why doing a 2 step cleanse will prove extremely effective, especially at night.
No matter your skin type, the main steps involved in double-cleansing are the same:
STEP 1:
Use an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to wipe off makeup and oil buildup. This will gently remove make-up and oils.
STEP 2:
Now lather with a gentle cleanser and water. This will deeply penetrate the pores to remove impurities.
If you’ve been wearing heavy make-up all day, then a double cleansing with a micellar water can be helpful to remove the layer of makeup to then let the cleanser truly clean the skin. You will literally see the difference on your skin.
Even if you don’t wear makeup regularly, it’s still important to make sure you’re cleansing at the end of the day. This is for dirt and pollution that accumulates on our skin during the day and cause oxidative damage to the skin. This contributes to the breakdown of collagen and appearance of wrinkles and sun spots.
With perfectly clean skin, it becomes a canvas for your skin care products to penetrate deeper, making them more effective. Clean skin will allow active ingredients to penetrate better and work more effectively.
If you have acne-prone skin or you tend to get oily by noon, the double cleanse every night will be helpful in keeping you shine-free.
Sleeping without cleaning your face is a big no-no as it can cause major acne breakouts and irritations. But is it enough to just rinse with water?
Double cleansing will be the right tool for you to first lift dirt and grime and then to wash them away.
