Skin fasting? The new secret to refreshed skin.

Hello to you beauties, skin experts and skinfluencers! You’re the ones out there perfecting your skin care routines and staying ahead of all the skin care trends with all the latest products. Morning and night, you know what to use, which product for what and how to optimize a routine to get max benefits for your skin.

But what if we’re using too many products? How do we know if our skin needs a break from our routine?

Just like our bodies, our skin might be in need of a detox- which is where skin fasting comes in. We caught up with Dr. Costi between appointments to get his opinion on this growing trend and why it might be advisable to do it.

What is skin fasting? 🤍

“Skin fasting means taking a break from all of your skincare products to give your skin time to rest and reset,” explains Dr. Costi. “This should allow your skin to naturally function the way it was intended before the use of skincare products.”

Just like doing a food fast, it’s very simple: you either eliminate ALL your skin products, or some, for various periods of time. This will depend on the person and their skin’s health.

The purpose is to allow your skin to rebuild its protective layer by itself, making it naturally stronger and healthier. It’s also a good way to discover if any products have cause you irritation or other skin problems. This allows you to discover what really works best for your skin type.

How do you skin fast? 🌞

Skin fasting can vary from one person to another. You may choose to completely stop every skin product, from cleanser and toner, to serum and moisturizers. Or you may still want to clean your face in the morning with a face wash. Bottom line is, you’re giving your skin a break, letting its natural oils do the balancing and protecting. And here’s the thing: as you watch your skin in its natural state, you will understand what it needs.

Maybe you don’t need a 20 step skin care routine that you’ve been struggling to keep up with, right?

“You have to be very responsible with this: we are simplifying NOT revolting against the system!” exclaims Dr. Costi. “We don’t want to cause unwanted problems like breakouts from lack of cleansing, or sun damage from not wearing SPF.”

So 2 basic rules to keep in mind: keep your skin clean, and keep using sunscreen.

Can anyone try skin fasting?

Skin fasting is mostly beneficial for those with sensitive and dry skin. As the fast will allow the skin to rest from ingredients that may cause inflammation.

If you feel like your skin is unusually dry, irritated or lackluster, even though you’ve been using many products to take care of it, then it’s time to try skin fasting.

However, if you have chronic skin conditions like acne, eczema or rosacea, then ask your dermatologist first before you stop using your topical products and prescriptions. You also need to check about wearing sunscreen and limiting sun exposure if you’ve been using a retinol product- so please ask Dr. Costi first.

So is it recommended?

“I advise you to give your skin a break if you feel like your skin needs a reboot or if you’re confused about what your skin needs. So I do recommend skin fasting” says Dr. Costi.

He adds “I advise you to use the basics cleanser + sunscreen every once in a while, giving your skin the time to reboot and refresh.”

“And remember, your skin is very smart and the better you treat it, the better it can preserve itself.”

What do you think beauties? The skin fasting diet starts Monday 😉💋
