We asked Dr. Costi about this healing herb which has been used for centuries and has a long list of healing benefits.
Centella asiatica, cica, is an antioxidant-rich, medicinal herb that goes by many names and that has long been used in Asia to treat illnesses and heal wounds.
Now gaining popularity as a skin care ingredient because “It contains high concentrations of amino-acids, beta carotene and fatty acids” as per Dr. Costi, which makes this herb so beneficial.
Gathered from swamps in Asia, it started appearing in Koran cica creams, and now Western beauty brands are all claiming it as the hot new beauty ingredient.
Anti-Aging, Moisturizing and Soothing
“The anti-inflammatory properties increase hydration and help soothe and repair dry, red, irritated skin,” explains Dr. Costi. That’s why it’s recommended for treating various skin conditions, especially those with symptoms such as psoriasis and eczema. “Cica also boosts circulation and increases collagen production, improving skin firmness and elasticity”.
Now that’s what we wanted to hear!
Gotu Kola
The main active ingredient in Centella Asiatica is madecassoside, also known as gotu kola, a strong anti-oxidant.
This skin care ingredient provides strong anti-aging benefits due to its ability to intrinsically protect skin molecules from degradation.
Topical application of centella asiatica products can also help bolster the skin barrier function. This improves moisture-retention in the skin, which induces a skin-soothing effect especially for upset or sensitive skin.
Centella Asiatica is used in cleansers, toners, serums, and creams.
Dr. Costi advises to “Use a cica cream either morning or night, and also try a serum for maximum effect.”
In case of irritation, Dr. Costi advises to apply the cica balm on top of your retinoid at night- as retinoids can aggaravate skin, the cica will prevent an inrritated complexion.
For skin barrier
Centella asiatica extract is a rich source of natural bioactive substances, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpenic steroids, amino acids and sugars. It can help revitalize skin’s protective barrier, plus it may mitigate some of the visible effects of sun damage.
For acne
Centella Asiatica improves oil balance and helps the dermis layer of the skin to enhance collagen synthesis and boost skin elasticity. It is beneficial for acne sufferers as it speeds healing, helps prevent scarring and future blemishes.
For hair
It’s also used to strengthen hair and promote hair growth. Gotu kola is one of the most popular Ayurvedic herbs, thought to increase hair length and stimulate hair growth by increasing blood circulation to the scalp.
