The first rules of Beauty after 40 (part 1)

Ok beauties, let’s get real.

We know that we want to look like we don’t spend too much time taking care of our skin (hello #skinimalism). However, the fact is that the older we get, the bigger the investment we have to make in our skin care. And it do take work! 😉

So while there is a lot for us to do to stay fresh, glowing and beautiful, the good news is that we have so many options to make it happen and so many products to help us maintain youthful skin.

We’ve asked Dr. Costi to share some of his best skin care rules for beauty over 40, and as the list is long, we have divided them into 2 parts 🥰

Let’s tackle the first 5 rules of beauty over 40 today 💌

💖💖💖💖💖

Maybe you do, maybe you don’t, but “If you’re starting to see changes in your skin at 40, it’s totally normal for your age group” says Dr. Costi. The fact is that they are due to perimenopause (the stage before menopause) where your hormones start to change, mainly estrogen that gets lower causing your skin to lose elasticity. Collagen production will also drop causing skin to get thinner.

Another factor that may affect your skin now is early years of unprotected sun exposure, so you might see sun spots and deep wrinkles suddenly appearing.

So whether you want to develop a complex routine or you’d like to keep it simple, we’ve got some tips you’ll surely like to try.

1) Cleanse with the right product

As cleansing is a huge part of a healthy skin care routine, it’s very important to use the appropriate product per your skin type.

We love everything that’s gentle and natural and easy on all skin types like a foam that will easily remove any buildup.

If you’re on the dryer side, you can use an oil-based product to give an extra dose of hydration. As to greasy complexions, look for a formula with salicylic acid (recommended by Dr. Costi).

2) Invest in antioxidants

It’s time to invest in a daytime serum with antioxidants.

The most popular antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, resveratrol, and Niacinamide. “These prevent the degradation of precious collagen” as Dr. Costi explains.

Vitamins C and E work at fending off UVA and UVB free radicals, as well as repairing and preventing any further sun damage.

3) Witness the magic of retinol

Vitamin A (retinoids or retinol) will work like magic to erase wrinkles and give you your best healthy skin after 40.

It is the star ingredient of any nighttime skin care as it helps prevent acne breakouts, smooth the skin’s surface and even-out any discoloration.

Because retinol is rather strong, talk to Dr. Costi before starting any kind of treatment, especially if you have sensitive skin.

4) Moisturize often

Even if you’ve applied a serum and a cream, you might need to re-hydrate your face at some point during the day.

It’s because oil production slows down after age 40, so you’ll need to replenish your skin and skin barrier more frequently.

Look for a product that contains hydrating ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and glycerin and keep it handy, reapplying it when you feel your skin tightening.

5) Protect from the sun

And what is Dr. Costi’s number 1 rule? Always wear SPF.

All the skin care in the world won’t mean anything if you’re not protecting your skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

“A UVA/UVB SPF 30 or more is the ultimate tool to preventing any future damage or signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots”.

Some research even suggest that sunscreen can actually reverse the signs of aging. Myth or fact? We want to believe it’s true!
