Who’s excited for the arrival of the New Year? Well beauties, we know we are! A new year means new products to play with and new skin care routines to try. After all, we’ve become experts since in 2020 we had to really rely on ourselves- as beauty salons closed and we were often quarantined, we have depended on ourselves like true beauty champions.
What better time to be adventurous, to go out hunting for new trends and bring them all back home? We went ahead and did some research for ingredients, moisturizers, cleansers, serums and more.
Here are some of the new skin care trends that will be big in 2021.
Microbiome Skin Care
Just like probiotics help our gut health, they are now believed to help our skin health. These friendly bacteria that naturally proliferate in our body are being increasingly used in our skin care nowadays.
Our skin microbiome is the microorganisms that live on it and keeps us healthy, protecting us against germs and producing vitamins.
Probiotic skin care is apparently the way of the future. A healthy microbiome equals a healthy, balanced skin that can fight off many irritations and diseases. Therefore, our ultimate goal will be a healthy microbiome rich in healthy bacteria.
An example of this is the link between acne and acne medication. The medication Isotretinoin helps acne because it balances the skin microbiome.
As “microbiome-friendly” skin care becomes more available, it will include pre-biotics and post-biotics, as well as probiotics. Just be really careful with your brand choices! The Korean labs have got the most advanced research on the subject so far, with the next generation of microbiome ingredients including plant-based probiotics.
Fresh Faced Beauty
Remember the no make-up make-up trend? It’s back and bigger than ever. As the Korean glass-skin phenomenon picks up, a perfect clean face is now what everyone is after. More natural beauty is the new trend, with natural shiny skin being celebrated.
After the pandemic, all complicated make-up routines are out. Skinimalism is in.
Zoom Face Procedures
Having to stare at our own faces has really opened people’s eyes to their tiniest facial imperfections. Apparently, more and more people are concerned with their “Zoom Face” that shows eye bags, forehead wrinkles and dark circles. Cosmetic procedures from injections, to Botox to eyelid surgery are on the rise.
Now we recommend you book an appointment with Dr. Costi in case you have any such concerns, but also try a good eye cream. There are many products to help reduce swelling and brightening of the under-eye circles.
Blue Light Protection Skin Care
Blue light (or High Energy Visible light) is emitted from tech screens like your laptop, phone and TV. It is also emitted from the sun, alongside UV rays- which are the biggest cause of skin aging.
So as we spend more and more time in front of our screens, we are being more and more exposed to blue light, and its related effects. Apparently, just like UV light, HEV can cause photo-aging, pigmentation, and even DNA damage. Can you imagine?
So naturally, new products have been developed to protect our skin. HEV-blocking skin care products (much like sunscreen) are meant to create a protective film over our skin to block-out the blue light. Products with ingredients such as marine extracts, iron oxide, zinc oxide, and Niacinamide are recommended alongside antioxidants and vitamins.
What if we just wear our sunscreen indoors (like we’ve been saying for ages btw)??
Hand Care of All Types
Well this one we really predicted! As we wash and sanitize our hands more and more, it’s never been more important to also moisturize them.
So what a surprise to find new hand-sanitizers that also leave your skin supple! More and more brands are creating nourishing formulas that fight germs, smell nice as well as hydrate your irritated hands! Look for mew products with squalene.
Ecofriendly Skin Care Products
Not only are people demanding more natural products, they also want them clean and ecofriendly.
Consumers want to know what’s going on their skin, as well as whether what they’re buying is increasing their carbon footprint. This has translated into sustainable refillable packaging for skin care products.
So far only a few brands have taken this step, making their refill cream containers in a design that can be replenished but it is still expensive.
More and more brands are making the pledge to transition into recyclable packaging, which would eventually make this trend the new norm, and more affordable.
Succinic Acid Acne Treatment
We all know that salicylic acid is a great way to exfoliate your skin. Well now meet the magical new ingredient Succinic Acid. The new anti-acne treatments are using the anti-inflammatory ingredient succinic acid, which helps to reduce oil levels in your skin.
Look for new products that are combining succinic acid with salicylic acid to get a powerful acne treatment.
We’re excited for all the innovations, especially for more self-care and natural beauty trends. Let’s all start the new decade with a zoom-ready face, soft hands and a maskne-free smile.
Cheers to 2021.
