5 tips for winter dry skin

Baby it’s cold outside! Isn’t it so beauties?

Well never mind, because as skin experts ourselves we already know all the tips to keep our skin beautiful during any cold weather or extreme changes in temperatures (of course from following Dr. Costi’s tips 😉.) The best way to combat dry skin is to apply moisturizer, use winter-specific products adapted to our skin, and NEVER use hot water in the shower.

Well then how come our skin is flaky and dryer than the Sahara?

We reached-out to Dr. Costi for a few winter-specific rules to include in our skin care routine, to avoid the trap of dry winter skin.

Here are 5 rules to follow for beautiful glowing skin even in the coldest conditions.

1. Moisturize at the right time.

As per Dr. Costi, it’s always best to moisturize immediately after cleansing your face or showering, rather than when your skin is dry. “While your skin is clean and still damp, apply your moisturizer to seal in the hydration and soak up all the active ingredients”.

We like The Organic Pharmacy Double Rose Rejuvenating Face Cream, a light yet nourishing cream that makes your skin glow!

2. Get the best ingredients

When you’re choosing your moisturizer, choose the right ingredients for your skin type. “Look for ceramides that help your skin to heal itself, and hyaluronic acid for added hydration” says Dr. Costi.

Choose a cream like the SVR CeraBiotic Regenerating Filling Balm which is specifically formulated to fulfill the needs of dry skin and also wrinkles.

Rich in Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, and Pasteurized Probiotics, it helps moisturize and plump the skin while strengthening the skin barrier.

3. Use the right cleanser

The first step to healthy skin is clean skin, but cleansing with a soft hydrating balm is key to keeping your skin’s pH levels. “An alkaline pH (from soap for example) can irritate your skin, making it unable to retain hydration” as Dr. Costi explains.

We recommend using a gentle cleanser like the The Organic Pharmacy Rose and Chamomile Cleansing Milk which removes impurities and makeup while remaining gentle on skin. Perfect for sensitive or redness-prone skin.

4. Sleep with a mask

Alternating with your rich night cream, a night mask is a great way to drive away that winter dryness for soft skin.

“Sleeping with an overnight mask creates a seal on top of your skin which makes everything underneath it penetrate better and soak more effectively”. That’s why we love to apply our serum, cream and face oil, and then lather a generous coat of a sleep mask like the Filorga NCEF-Night Mask.

With a concentrated formula of 50 active ingredients (amino-acids, vitamins, antioxidants, co-enzymes, minerals), your skin is transformed overnight and radiant in the morning.

5. Don’t forget to treat inflammation.

Because of dry winter weather, your skin may appear flaky, lackluster, and visibly dehydrated. But it can also be severely inflamed, and it’s not enough to just treat it with a good moisturizer.

“When the skin cracks because of severe dehydration, it can become red, inflamed and itchy. That’s when you need to visit your dermatologist for a prescription to help treat the inflammation” recommends Dr. Costi.

To accelerate skin healing, try a soothing balm like the Eucerin Aquaphor. This SOS multitasker is a water-free ointment that repairs irritated skin, protects and soothes dry to very dry, cracked and irritated skin. To be used on the hands, elbows, knees and face, it creates the ideal protective barrier to support skin regeneration.

Well beauties, you know what we think: better safe than sorry. If you feel that your skin is dry and you don’t know why, don’t take any risk with your face and schedule your appointment with Dr. Costi!

After all, your skin is your greatest investment: it has to last you a lifetime!
