3 steps to beautiful curly hair: here is the Curly Girl Method

  • August 2, 2020

Curly haired girls, it’s your time! Now is when you should embrace the curl, the natural wave, the hassle free look of summer. (Ok, but mostly also because #corona and #noelectriciy). However, maintaining perfect curls is not always so hassle free! They get frizzy and lumpy, and for some reason they un-curl during the night, go figure! So we thought it was the perfect time to talk about the Curly Girl Method, the most popular curly hair philosophy. Let’s learn all about it and about the best products to enhance your natural hair.

WHAT’S THE CURLY GIRL METHOD?

If you have curly hair, you’ll know that conventional hair advice doesn’t work for you. It’s totally different than straight hair, because curly hair is more prone to dryness and it doesn’t react well to conventional shampoos and conditioners. According to the curl expert Lorraine Massey who created the curly girl book, avoiding shampoo, so-called “no-poo” method, is the cornerstone of the curly girl method. Basically, if you have any hair other than straight hair, (wavy, curly, afro and kinky hair) this method could work for you.

If you have damaged hair, you need the Curly Girl Method.

That’s the best news for you. If you don’t have curly hair but want to give your hair a damage-free lifestyle this method is totally great. By applying the 3 simple steps to style your damaged hair, your hair will recover and start looking healthy again.

Before we start remember:

Avoid using shampoos with harsh chemicals (surfactants). These strong ingredients can remove dirt and oils, but can also strip your hair of its natural moisture, leaving it frizzy and fried.

Avoid using anything with silicones and silicone-based compounds. While they can smooth your hair, these also seal-out moisture and can create buildup.

3 steps to FOLLOW THE CURLY GIRL METHOD

Step 1: Cleanse or Co-Wash

Co-washing is where you wash your hair with silicone-free conditioner. Instead of relying on the action of surfactants (chemical cleaning agents that create foam), you’ll rely on the physical motion of scrubbing your scalp to remove dirt, oil, and buildup. The conditioner acts as a lubricant for the scrubbing, and it also helps dissolve out the oils.

Look for products such as: extra-gentle shampoo, curl and shine shampoo, nourishing shampoo and moisture retention shampoo. Also look for products containing natural proteins like rice protein which helps to strengthen the hair.

Step 2: Condition

After gentle shampooing or co-washing, you’ll rinse out the excess cleanser and condition your hair. Yes you need a separate conditioning step. CG-friendly conditioners contain moisturizing oils and other natural ingredients. Comb it through your hair using a wide-toothed-comb in the shower.

Look for products such as: intensive hydration masks, moisturizing conditioners and frizz management conditioners.

Step 3: Style

As you finish rinsing out your conditioner you should avoid combing or brushing the hair to avoid breaking the curls and creating frizz. It’s always best to let your hair air-dry wherever possible. Scrunch your hair instead to encourage your natural curl pattern to form and dry the excess moisture. One of the best ways to dry curly hair without making it frizz is to gently scrunch it with a microfiber towel.

If you don’t have time to let your hair dry naturally, the best thing is to use a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment, on low heat setting. This helps to diffuse the air from your hair dryer so it won’t break up curls and cause frizz.

Then you can scrunch-in a styling product.

Look for products such as: frizz control gel, leave-in conditioners, curl enhancers, curling gel and hair oils.
